Artist Statement and Bio
Bio:
Erin Casey grew up in the small town of Lyons until 2003 when she began her art education at the University of Northern Colorado. She was fond of her life in Lyons within a small community which valued art, the outdoors, and a slower way of life.
When she began her journey at UNC she was unsure of her direction, but with a passion for art she took every class she could - drawing, painting, photography, graphic design, metal smithing, printmaking and ceramics. She was a natural with clay and found it to be her favorite material for creating the forms she envisioned. She received her B.A. from UNC in 2008.
Until 2008 Erin's creativity in clay was focused on non-functional hand-built sculpture. She has gravitated toward the beauty of utilitarian pottery and is making art to be used and enjoyed on a daily basis. She works as a studio potter at the Arvada Ceramic Arts Guild, making contemporary porcelain pots and learning how to create her own vibrant glazes.

Statement:
I value beauty and harmony in the world, and personal connections; objects which are well-crafted, skillfully designed and made with passion. This is why I make pots. I strive to create objects which will initiate conversations between those who use them, and between the users and myself. I want to give people a reason to have open shelves in their kitchen instead of closed cabinets. I appreciate fine lines, elegance, strength, intention, rhythm and balance, and I am working to create these elements in pots that are joyful to use in everyday life.
I started drawing bicycles on pots in 2007 when I traded my car for one at New Belgium Brewery's Tour de Fat. I was never an avid cyclist, but I realized I could experience a better quality of life in the slow lane, so I agreed to commute via bike for one year. I am now telling stories with the bicycle, reflecting my life and emotions: The bicycle is lost in a strange, beautiful world, small among the towering flowers; she dives, sometimes with conviction, other times accidental; she launches to the moon, reaching for the stars and striving to succeed, or simply feeling joyous and out-of-this-world; and she is growing, traveling to the top. I am also working on bringing together the elements of a pot - the drawing, form and glaze - to create a unified work of art.
